War Museum of Leros

In 1930 the Italians constructed a network of underground and aboveground ammunition depots at the region of Merikia. In the tunnels of the fort there is a considerable number of exhibits from the Second World War, such as weapons, maps, photos and uniforms. The surrounding area has been turned into a military park, where you can see decommissioned military vehicles, tanks and fighter planes.

The tunnel of Merikia is open daily in the summer.

Belenis Tower

The tower was built in 1903. It is made of stone, it has two floors and it is located at the seafront of Alinda. It is surrounded by a nice and large courtyard with two buildings of the same style right in front of the garden.

The Tower is of great architectural interest as it combines medieval military architecture with neoclassical elements. Today it houses the Historical and Folklore Museum of Leros, while cultural events take place in its courtyard in the summer.

Panteli Castle

The castle stands on top of Pityos hill, on the northeast side of Leros, at an altitude of about 600 meters above the sea. In 1087, the Castle was given to Saint Christodoulos who is also the founder of the Monastery of Saint Theologian at Patmos. The four coats of arms on the fortification are a testimony of the Knights occupation of the island who were also interested in repairing the castle. On the west side of the fortress there is the Church of Our Lady, perhaps built in the 18th century, with important paintings of worship.

Paleokastro

The Castle is built at an altitude of 58 m. above the plain of Xirokampos. It is also known as Paleokastro and it has been associated with the Castle of Lepides. When emperor Alexios Komninos gave the Castle of Pandeli to Saint Christodoulos, he also gave the Castle of Lepides to the inhabitants of Leros, who used it as a shelter against the attacks of enemies. Based on the remains of the fortification that we can still see nowadays, the castle dates back to the Hellenistic period or maybe even the Middle Byzantine period or the period of the Knights.

St. Matrona - Kioura

North of Partheni you will find a vaulted church built in the 18th century. The walls are decorated with unique frescoes of non-Byzantine style. During the years of the dictatorship, the church was ruined until a group of political prisoners (Manolis Glezos and painters Kyr. Tsakiris, Ant. Karagiannis and T. Tzaneteas) decided to repair it. The three exiled painters depicted the history of the island on the interior walls, using prisoners, women of Leros and gendarmes as their models.
